The Students' Union Government (SUG) of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has rejected the University Management's proposal to increase school fees by 100% starting from the 2025/26 academic session. The SUG cites funding challenges as the reason behind the proposed hike.
Following an emergency meeting with Management and consultations with students and leaders across UNN and UNEC campuses, the SUG has resolved to accept a maximum increase of 25%, considering current economic realities. Students strongly opposed any increase in hostel fees without improvements in living conditions.
The SUG urges Management to adopt the 25% increment and suspend hostel fee increases until conditions improve. The union assures students that dialogue continues and their interests remain the priority. The move follows consultations with students and leaders over 72 hours.
The union notes that students are facing economic challenges and cannot afford a 100% increase. The SUG emphasizes that any increase in fees should be reasonable and accompanied by improved facilities and services.
The SUG assures students that their concerns are being heard and addressed, and they remain committed to advocating for students' interests.
