Tensions are running high at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, following the management's sudden increase in school fees and acceptance fees for freshmen. The move, which caught students off guard, has seen acceptance fees jump from 30,000 to 50,000 naira, while school fees have more than doubled from around 115,000 to 235,000 naira. The increment has sparked widespread outrage across the university community, with many condemning the decision as arbitrary and insensitive.
The Student Union Government (SUG) had earlier advocated for a maximum 25% increase in fees, but their proposals were seemingly ignored. Now, the SUG is at odds with external bodies who are planning to stage a protest against the fee hike. These external groups, comprised of concerned individuals and organizations, are pushing ahead with their plans despite the SUG's objections.
In a memo, the SUG clarified that they are currently engaged in dialogue with the university management and are optimistic about reaching a resolution. They have issued a disclaimer against the planned protest, scheduled for January 20, 2026, urging students and the public to refrain from participating. "We implore students and members of the public to desist from any protest that will jeopardize the dialogue and has possibility of causing havoc in the university community," the SUG stated.
The SUG's stance has been met with skepticism by some, who question the effectiveness of their approach. As tensions continue to simmer, the university community waits with bated breath for a resolution to the impasse.
